What is Adoption?
This article is a brief and general overview about Adoption. Adoption is the legal means by which a family can permanently take on the responsibility of raising a child and become the new family for the child.
What are the relevant laws?
The Child, Youth, and Family Services Act is the primary laws that govern adoption in Ontario.
What are the different types of adoption?
There are 4 main types of adoption:
1. Public Adoption
In a public adoption, people can adopt a child who is in the care of a Children's Aid Society.
2. International Adoption
In an international adoption, people can adopt a child who lives outside Canada.
3. Private Domestic Adoption
In a private domestic adoption, people can adopt a child using a private adoption agency.
4. Adoption of a stepchild or relative
To adopt a stepchild or relative who lives in Ontario, you can apply directly to an Ontario court for an adoption order.
